The extension of the Madurai-Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) industrial corridor and the establishment of new economic zones, proposed in the state Budget for 2012-13 which was presented by O Panneerselvam, finance minister, Government of Tamil Nadu, recently, could provide the agriculture sector a fillip, but there seemed to be little in store for the food processing sector.
S V S S Velsankar, honorary secretary, Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants' Association, Madurai, confirmed this in a telephonic conversation with FnB News, adding, “Cold storage units will be set up for the storage of fruit and vegetables.” He said, “Neither have the existing tax rates been hiked nor have any new taxes been levied.”
