Temperature controlled warehouse can be a solution to control wastage of products, according to Amit Singh, head, procurement & distribution, ITC foods. He made this observation at a panel discussion which was organised as part of the seventh edition of India Cold Chain Show (ICCS ) being held from December 13 to 15, 2018, at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC).

The event is showcasing cold storage infrastructure, refrigeration, transport, temperature control, IT solutions and data storage solutions among others. Apart from panel discussion, the first day of the show saw the holding of a conference.

The show was inaugurated by Anuj Mathur, COO, Reed Manch Exhibitions India; David Rogers, chairman, Asia Pacific Logistics Federation (APLF); Hasmukh Gandhi, president, Madhya Pradesh Cold Storage Association; and Ashish Guru, president, Gujarat Cold Storage Association (GCSA).

Addressing the ICCS conference, Ashutosh Taparia, regional business head, bigbasket, shared his experiences on managing cold chains. He stated, “We can clearly figure out the dichotomy in demand and supply side. For example, 90% of market demands POT i.e., potato, onion, tomato, the main issue lies with integration and now we have improved on it.”

Later, at a panel discussion on Technology Integration in Commodity Warehousing - Challenges in Cold Chain, Amit Singh, head, procurement & distribution, ITC foods, stated, “We are self-sufficient in grains and vegetables and there is increase in food processing industries too. Temperature controlled warehouse can be a solution to control the wastage of products.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the event to FnB News, Dr K Rathnam, former MD, Amul, pointed out that cold chain was a growing segment in India, although technological innovations were needed, which could benefit customers more, such as “Alternative source of fuel can reduce the use of petrol.”

The event is being supported by national and state run associations like NCCD (National Centre for Cold Chain Development), FCAOI (the Federation of Cold Storage Association of India), NHB (National Horticulture Board), and APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority).
