Coffee Board unveiled the Coffee Connect App to enhance the effectiveness of delivery of extension services by its extension personnel, while also enabling the tracking of outcomes.
The Board, in collaboration with Precision Agriculture for Development India Foundation (PADIF), launched a pilot Coffee Krishi Taranga, an IVRS-based mobile extension service aimed at maximising the reach of the Board’s services in the limited time available.
“In association with EKA Analytics, a few technology applications such as Pest Identification Mobile App, Hyper Local Weather Forecast, Pest (White Stem Borer) Identification Application, Leaf Rust Disease Forecast and Block Chain Based Market Place App have been announced for the pilot testing,” said Srivatsa Krishna, chief executive officer and secretary, Coffee Board.
As International Coffee Day has entered its fourth year, Coffee Board has now partnered with Ernst & Young to devise the Future of Coffee-Road Map: Development of a strategy to improve the overall Coffee sector performance across the value chain.
“This is from production to consumption by analysing production challenges and proposing need-based interventions to strengthen small coffee growers, strategy for effective positioning if Indian coffee in both global market and domestic markets, and technological interventions to overcome identified challenges,” he added.
The key areas of work under this initiative are the assessment of production-level challenges, value chain analysis, effective positioning of Indian coffee and conceptual framework with technological interventions.
The National Institute of Public Finance and Policy has also embarked on a study to assess the impact of coffee subsidies on the sector.
The objective is to gauge the benefits of various subsidies extended by the Coffee Board on farmers and exporters.
“In this regard, an assessment report on how far the government incentive schemes have helped the overall coffee sector, in terms of both production as well as its productivity with suggestions on policy level interventions required to help in scaling up the overall coffee production as well as exports in India is underway,” said the Coffee Board chief.
The aim of this report, according to the Coffee Board chief, is to measure the extent of outlays provided to implement the Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP).
Further, the intent was also to examine the impact of the incentive schemes on production, productivity and quality of coffee, understand the implementation issues at the ground level, provide inputs to the government with regard to continuation of the existing schemes and identify the relevant incentive mechanism for the growth of the sector.
