In the wake of cases of adulteration of such commodities as chilli and turmeric powder and ginger and garlic paste, Government of Telangana has decided to manufacture spices and sell them under the brand name Kakatiya Foods. The project is in its initial stage and is awaiting government’s nod and allocations. The statutory requirements are yet to be fulfilled.

According to sources, Telangana State Horticulture Development Corporation Limited (TSHDCL) and the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru, will jointly handle this project, and the state government has already marked 15 acre of land for the same.

Fighting adulteration
A TSHDCL official said, “We took this step, as high adulteration cases were found in such spices as chilli powder, turmeric powder and other spices that are used daily.”

“We found this to be a serious issue across the state and decided to work on it. So, we are coming up with our own brand of spice products, Kakatiya Foods,” she added.

The official said, “Telangana is one of the leading state in spice production. Though the production is high, the cost of produce obtained by farmers is very low. Through this project, the state will benefit the farmers, as it will fetch them higher prices for their produce.”

“The project is still in the initial stage. We are in the process of obtaining approval and allocation for the manufacturing unit. We are hopeful of getting the government’s nod soon. It will take about a month to get a clear picture. Only then will we be able to divulge more information about the said project,” she added.

The government has already earmarked 15 acre of land for this project, and when the formalities are fulfilled, TSHDCL will commence production. The objective of the project is to manufacture spices and to sell it from their own outlets. TSHDCL is also hoping to export these products.
