MP milk traders concerned about delay in results of adulteration tests
Wednesday, 21 August, 2019, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
Milk traders in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district have expressed concern over the alleged delay in test results of the samples taken for suspected adulteration. The traders expressed that this has led to the downfall in their businesses.

According to the reports, a huge backlog has been created of the untested samples, resulting in the delay in test reports. The food safety officer remained tight-lipped on the subject and did not comment, when contacted.

However, the traders stated that the delay has created a sense of fear amongst the traders, and even honest traders are feeling pressure of a slowdown in the trade. “The results should be out in a time-bound manner,” said Bharat Mathurawala, head of the milk traders’ association.

Interestingly, FSSAI has fixed the timeline for outcome of the test results. For chemical and microbiological testing, the referral labs were asked to submit the reports in five days. According to the state food department, close to 125 samples were collected in Indore in the month of August, but only 34 results were out.

According to another senior official with the Madhya Pradesh food safety department, the lab infrastructure in the state remains a cause of concern, as they need to send the samples to Bhopal’s government testing facility. The situation is so stressed that samples were even sent outside of the state to Gujarat and Maharashtra.
