FSSAI & BIS norms dominate seminar as Intelpack 2019, 13th Foodtek open

Intelpack 2019 - the 16th essay of India’s largest packaging exhibition, providing visitors an unparalleled networking opportunity with the packaging industry, and showcasing the entire gamut of packaging, processing and supply chain management to participants, was inaugurated here on Thursday at Bombay Exhibition Centre. The show will be on till September 28, 2019.
 
Samir Limaye, president of IPMMI; Vilas Dighe, general manager of IFCA; Milind Wagle, head, projects, IFCA; Diwakar Shetty, owner of Shetron Limited; V Narayanan, manager administration, IFCA; and Krishnan V, director, Spheretech Packaging; were among those who inaugurated the show.

Intelpack, which has been delivering business and business contacts since its inaugural edition in 1990, has collaborated with the Indian Flexible Packaging and Folding Carton Manufacturers’ Association (IFCA) and the Institute of Packaging Machinery Manufacturers of India (IPMMI).

The show, organised by Intel Trade Fairs and Exposition Pvt Ltd, is co-located with Foodtek 2019, PharmaPack and SupplyChain Expo. Foodtek is the 13th edition of India’s largest and most successful exhibition and conference on food and beverage processing and packaging, and is home to a wide range of products and services.

Flexible laminates and films, filling and closing machines, flow wrap machines, labelling machines, inspecting and detecting machines, material handling and conveying machines, security systems products and services were showcased prominently at the show. Robotics displays were drawing large crowds.
 
SupplyChain Expo2019
Manufacturing and distribution buyers and decision-makers from the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors are attending SupplyChain Expo with innovations running as the dominant theme.
 
Seminar on Packaging & Food Safety
Apart from the four concurrent events, various seminars and sessions are being organised. On the first day, the Metal Container Manufacturers’ Association organised a seminar on Packaging & Food Safety.

Speaking at the seminar on Regulatory affairs, with special reference to food & metal packaging, Dr Sheetal Gupta, deputy director, FSSAI, said, "Packaging material should be as per FSS requirements. In absence of FSS standard, Indian standards like BIS may be referred. If not, then relevant international standards may be applied."

She added, "While proposing typical food grade requirement, FSSAI imposes certain adherence along with certain relaxations. Also, as per the rules, newspaper or any such material shall not be used for wrapping food."

Later, Ashraf Chitalwala, director, Zarhak Steel Ltd, spoke on Metal packaging, including making of tinplate containers.

He said, "FSSAI has emphasised the use of BIS or ISO equivalent certified tinplate for the food industry. If you just use BIS or ISO equivalent certified tinplate, it is not enough.The material must have the correct tin coating thickness, temper and if required or must be supported by proper lacquering materials."

Among the remaining speakers at the seminar, Dr R Rangaprasad, business head, Packaging 360, spoke on Metal packaging: Addressing food safety and environmental sustainability. He stated, "Asia will remain the top performing region within the global metal packaging market in the period leading up to 2023. The value sales to increase more than 18%. Also, the development of chromium free passivation method to meet the new European REACH regulation for chemicals in September 2017."
