SEA Crop Estimate Committee set up to assess kharif, rabi oilseed crops

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) has established the SEA Crop Estimate Committee under the convenership of G G Patel, the association’s past president, to assess the kharif and rabi oilseed crop in consultation with the members of respective oilseed committees, and through the primary and secondary surveys have estimated rabi oilseed production for the year 2016-17 season.

Observations for rabi oilseed crops
- The area under rabi oilseed crops in 2016-17 increased to 91.90 lakh hectare from 85.77 lakh hectare last year (i e up by 6.13 lakh hectare)
- Rabi groundnut crop has increased to 15.45 lakh tons from 12.40 lakh tons of last year, up by 3.05 lakh tons
- Rapeseed/mustard, including taramira crop, increased to 69.71 lakh tons from 58 lakh tons of last year, up by 11.71 lakh tons
- Rabi sunflower seed crop decreased to 1.30 lakh tons from 2.40 lakh tons of last year, down by 1.10 lakh tons
- Rabi sesame seed crop marginally increased to 2.30 lakh tons from 2.25 lakh tons of last year, up by 0.05 lakh tons
- The overall rabi oilseed crop in 2016-17 increased to 91.76 lakh tons from 77.41 lakh tons last year, up by 14.35 lakh tones, thanks to a higher rapeseed crop

SEA had earlier estimated the kharif crop for the 2016-17 season.

General observations:
- The combined area of kharif and rabi oilseeds during 2016-17 as per the government of India, is about 282.22 lakh hectare and production of nine oilseed crops (kharif and rabi) for the current year (2016-17) is estimated to 269.31 lakh tons compared to 203.41 lakh tones of last year, up by 65.90 lakh tons (32 per cent)
- The total production, including cotton seed and copra, estimated at 381.86 lakh tons compared to 318.16 lakh tons in 2015-16
- The overall yield has increased to 954 kg/ha from 751 kg/ha last year
- Import of oilcakes, viz sunflower cake and copra cake, has risen sharply during 2016-17 for domestic processing, expecting a recovery about 60,000 tons of S E oils
- The total vegetable oil availability from kharif and rabi oilseeds crops for the year 2016-17 (between November 2016 and October 2017) has increased by 12.88 lakh tons and is estimated at 84.90 lakh tons compared to 72.02 lakh tons last year
- In view of bumper crop, the import of edible oil between November 2016 and October 2017 is likely to decrease and estimated at 140 lakh tons. Import of non-edible oil is likely to be two lakh tons. The total import of vegetable oils (edible and non-edible) is estimated at 142.0 lakh tons between 2016 and October 2017 against 147.38 lakh tons in 2015-16
