PureCircle, the world's leading producer and innovator of great-tasting stevia sweeteners for the global food and beverage (F&B) industry, inaugurated its first South Asia laboratory facility in Gurugram, and launched its Sigma Matrix Solutions range at Food Ingredients (Fi) Ingredients for F&B manufacturers to moderate the sugar content in their products.

PureCircle’s South Asia laboratory facility aims to support Indian F&B companies in their responsible drive to develop low-calorie, naturally-sweetened products for their consumers. The company has customised its range of products to complement the Indian palate, including tailored blends for carbonated drinks, juice drinks, ketchups, powdered drinks, yoghurts, flavoured milks and traditional sweets with deep sugar reduction.

Stevia (called meethi tulsi in Hindi) is a natural, zero-calorie, plant-based sweetener. Since high-purity stevia leaf extracts were approved for use across major food and beverages in India in 2015, the demand for this ingredient has increased.

To meet customer needs in this area, PureCircle opened its first South Asia food laboratory. The new facility offers a number of resources including marketing insights, regulatory support and formulation support to provide Indian F&B companies with tools to bring products to market quickly.

Commenting on the opening of the first South Asia laboratory facility in India and the launch of  Sigma Matrix solutions, Ajay Chandran, senior director and head, South Asia, PureCircle, said, “To address the rapidly-growing consumer demand for naturally-sourced, zero-calorie sweeteners, Indian food and beverage manufacturers are turning to stevia as a viable, plant-based solution.”

“We are receiving increasing requests from F&B companies in India to help them formulate stevia ingredients for their specific needs. PureCircle’s flagship South Asia laboratory is ready to support formulations for customers looking to reduce sugar with a new generation of ingredients stemming from the stevia leaf. With our portfolio of over sweeteners and flavours and global innovation leadership, we can help address our customers’ taste challenges like no one else,” he added.

“For months now, our technical teams have been working diligently to develop India-specific Sigma solutions suited for Indian products. We introduced them at the recently concluded Fi India, and have been pleasantly surprised at the overwhelming response of F&B players,” Chandran said.

Sohan Singh, technical manager, South Asia, PureCircle, commented, “The Sigma products suited to the Indian palate and industry were developed after several months of due diligence.”

“The results were Sigma D (for dairy products like yoghurts, fermented milks etc.), Sigma Traditional Sweets Wet, Sigma Sweets Dry (for traditional sweets like soan papdi, gulab jamun, etc.), Sigma B (for beverages like carbonates, mango and other flavoured juices, chocolate milk, etc.) and Sigma S (for tabletop and baking sweeteners),” he added.

“Besides these custom matrices, we have the capability to support customers’ specific product development needs through this new lab,” Singh said.

Chandran said, “We expect several stevia-sweetened products to be launched in the next few months, including several lower-calorie/sugar, naturally-sweetened carbonated drinks, juice drinks, flavoured milks, ice cream, kulfi or traditional sweets like gulab jamun. The consumers will soon have several choices of low-calorie, great-tasting and naturally-sweetened products in the country.”
