Cocoatrait has now launched its range of chocolates packed using cocoa husk paper which is up-cycled, plastic & paper free, recyclable, biodegradable and compostable.

Launched in Amsterdam earlier this year, the company has paved the way to be benchmarked in sustainability globally.

“We assume people product, environment & process sustainability as priority & promote flavour delivery through the use of minimal & natural ingredients,” said L Nitin Chordia, director, Cocoatrait.

“Our chocolate bars are packed using our cocoa husk paper which is upcycled, plastic & paper free, recyclable, biodegradable & compostable. This is our contribution towards reducing landfill. We have reduced every possible millimeter of the packaging used, helping us optimise your transport volume and making it more sustainable, reducing carbon footprint and occupying less shelf space at retail stores,” he added.

Embarking on a zero waste drive, the company stated that it was the first chocolate brand to follow with such an approach where the inner side of the packaging has mandala art templates, greetings, emergency contacts, habit tracker and so on, all of which make the wrapper reusable.

The use of technology QR and barcodes have been used to educate consumers by providing relevant information and reduce usage of space in our packaging material. The wrapper design is entirely printed at V-Excel Educational Trust aiming to support and foster inclusion and independence of individuals with special needs. The sustainable ingredients use organic cocoa beans of Indian origin, most of it from Kerala, which uses traditional non-refined organic khandsari or muscovado sugar.

The 10 natural flavours are Sukku Coffee, Masala Chai, Lavender, Banana, Pink Rose, Red Rose, Lemongrass, Coconut Milk, Cinnamon and Irish Coffee. The flavour oils have not been used. ”We print the (RDA) Recommended Daily Dietary Allowances clearly on the front of the pack, allowing us to be transparent & consumer-centric,” he added.

Made by Poonam Chordia and L Nitin Chordia, who are also India's first certified chocolate tasters, the health reduced sugar & high cocoa ensures a healthier chocolate experience.

In line with these principles, the company does not use white and milk chocolates.
