A training course on application of advanced molecular methods has recently got underway at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). Its objective is to provide exposure to the prospects of genetics and genomics in fisheries resource management, conservation and mariculture.
Organised by the institute’s marine biotechnology division with the financial support of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the 10-day long course will provide training to 25 teachers and researchers from various universities and ICAR research institutes across the country.
Important aspects of genetics and genomics that are relevant to marine biology and fisheries, including population genetics, population genomics, eDNA based estimation of marine biodiversity, next generation sequencing methods, etc., will be discussed during the training programme.
In addition, sessions intended to provide an overview of the marine fisheries resource management, challenges in mariculture, the impact of plastic pollution in the ocean, the effect of climate change on marine fisheries and the evolution of teleost fishes will also be held during the programme.
