Tetra Pak has been honoured with the food manufacturing innovation award at the prestigious Fi Europe exhibition for its revolutionary Tetra Pak air jet cleaning system for powder. The award recognizes the system's innovative dry cleaning approach, which delivers significant gains in efficiency, sustainability, and hygiene for powder handling equipment.
The winning technology replaces traditional, time-consuming manual cleaning-in-place (CIP) with a swift, dry method using high-speed compressed air jets and vacuum extraction. This change slashes cleaning time from 90 minutes to just 30 minutes, potentially saving producers up to €50,000 annually in operational costs and substantially increasing production uptime.
Crucially, the Air Jet system operates without water or chemicals, eliminating wastewater treatment and the moisture-related microbial risks associated with liquid cleaning. It also allows for the recovery of product residues, reducing annual product losses by up to 52,500 litres in trials.
The win underscores Tetra Pak's commitment to innovation, as two other products were also named finalists among 177 entrants the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer (which eliminates foaming in high-protein beverage production) and the whole oat beverage line (which increases yield by 25% and boosts nutritional fibre and protein content).
Francois-Xavier Barbey, business stream director at Tetra Pak, commented that the air jet cleaning system sets a "benchmark for efficiency and innovation" and is a compelling investment for producers seeking higher profitability.
