Jose Graziano da Silva, director general, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), will be joined by Pope Francis and ministers of agriculture attending the Group of Seven (G7) meetings at the official World Food Day ceremony at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) agency in Rome on October 16, 2017.
Whereas traditionally a message from His Holiness is delivered during the WFD ceremony, the Pope will attend in person for the first time, and call on the international community to change the future of migration.
The presence of the G7 agriculture ministers will be testament to the important link between food security, rural development and migration on the political agenda. Other special guests will include Phil Hogan, commissioner, European Union (EU), and the heads of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
Towards Zero Hunger For the first time, FAO ambassadors for Zero Hunger will unite and discuss their efforts to mobilise action for Zero Hunger in their respective regions.
These include Carlo Petrini, president, Slow Food (Europe); Guadalupe Valdez, economist and former congresswoman (Latin America and the Caribbean); Darine El Khatib, media professional (the Near-East), and Kanayo F Nwanze, former president, IFAD (Africa).
A video message will also be delivered by Princess Maha Chakri Srindhorn, Zero Hunger ambassador, Asia. The FAO publication, Towards Zero Hunger, which explores FAO’s efforts to end hunger and malnutrition over the past 72 years, will also be launched during the event.
