Elite, a diversified group from South India that handles activities in various sectors, celebrated International Women’s Day at Thrissur recently. The celebrations were in line with this year’s theme, ‘I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights’, which believes in realising women’s rights to create a gender-equal world.

The health of women in our society is of particular concern, because they are disadvantaged by discrimination rooted in sociocultural factors. The slogan, ‘Healthy Women, Healthy World’, embodies the fact that as custodians of family health, women play a critical role in maintaining the health and well-being of their communities.

To celebrate women and raise awareness on health, Dr Mumtaz Khalid Ismail, consultant clinical nutritionist, addressed women employees from all units of the company at KILA, Thrissur on Day 1 of the two-day event.

A Ph D in foods and nutrition from Mother Theresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, she conducted a session titled Lifestyle changes the best treatment for a healthy life, in which she shared her knowledge on how small and basic modifications in life can benefit in the long run.

Dr Ismail shared some interesting tips with the audience, which was much appreciated by them. The informative session was attended by over 100 employees including women and men from different units.

Expressing her views on the session, she added, “I strongly advocate leading a healthy lifestyle and by making minor changes it will help you stay fit. Healthy eating habits and adequate physical activity alone can reduce the risk of diabetes by 58 per cent, reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure by 66 per cent, and reduce the risk of developing heart attacks and stroke by 40-60 per cent. Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are the leading causes of the major NCDs (non-communicable diseases).”

On Day 2, the Elite headquarters witnessed a flag-hoisting ceremony. The top-level managers of the company then addressed the employees, who were encouraged to take a pledge. A Women’s Day Pledge Wall was built on the premises as an emblem, signifying the deeply-embedded values of women empowerment and equality among the ethos of the company. The headquarters also plans to conduct (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) POSH awareness session for all its employees.

Talking about the Women’s Day celebrations, Danesa Raghulal, executive director, Elite Foods, said, “We, at Elite, believe in equal opportunities being presented to women and men, and are committed to providing an ambient professional environment aimed at growth of all individuals, regardless of their gender. We are blessed to have a workforce that complement each other and work towards achieving one common goal.”

Elite also plans to adopt girls from underprivileged backgrounds in and around their units to give financial support for each girl’s education till she gets self-employed. With this move, the company pledges to help women from impoverished backgrounds and give them a chance to achieve their dreams.
