CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI) conducted lectures on such topics as food safety and its regulations, nutrition and health and spirulina and its applications for 680 pupils of Government High School (GHS) Yelwala and 180 pupils of GHS Hinkal on the schools’ premises.
These were a part of a day-long student motivation programme, which also comprised demonstrations and was aimed at inculcating scientific temperament and inquisitiveness for the benefit of the high school students. The session was followed by interaction.
At the programme, simple tests to detect food adulteration were demonstrated to students and teachers using the kit developed by CFTRI, and nutritional supplements, such as spirulina chikki and high-protein biscuits were also distributed to the students.
The institute’s faculty, comprising Uma Manjappara, Jyothilakshmi, R Sarada, R V Sreedhar and Aruna Kumar, and research students coordinated the sessions. “The lecture of nutrition and safety evoke a great deal of interest among the participating students,” said Jitendra J Jadhav, director, CSIR-CFTRI.
