Plant-based diets are getting acceptance globally and India is not an exception. Dairy industry is one of the biggest industries in India but it is slowly getting replaced by dairy-free products.

Vegan dairy products are becoming mainstream products by maintaining similar sensory properties and enhanced nutritional value. People suffering from endometriosis, PCOS and lactose intolerance are recommended to follow a vegan lifestyle.

Millennials and gen Z generations are more conscious about the environment and willing to make healthy, eco-friendly sustainable choices. These are the majority of the consumers of vegan products. The advancements in technology, awareness, marketing through social media, and online purchase options are responsible for making dairy-free frozen desserts more accessible.

India is known for hot summers and frozen desserts, ice cream, kulfi are always preferred by Indians during the heatwave. When international brands of ice cream like Ben & Jerry’s and Baskin Robbins have launched dairy-free frozen desserts, Indian brands are not back in the race. There are many vegan brands available in India that produce delicious vegan frozen desserts to make this summer bearable.
  • White Cub - This is India’s first vegan brand of frozen dessert free of cholesterol, trans fat. This Delhi-based company was founded in 2012 and expanded in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. These products made up of the blend of coconut cream and soymilk are available in 19 flavours.
  • Papacream – Winner of PETA Food awards 2019, this brand is famous for various tasty frozen desserts as well as sorbets.
  • Nomou – A new brand started by parents in June 2022 to support their son’s vegan journey launched vegan gelato made with minimum ingredients by avoiding the use of preservatives, artificial flavours, colours or GMOs.
  • Vegan Bites – This is one of the special brands as this frozen dessert is sweetened by dates instead of sugar. This Mumbai-based company serves a few flavours via food delivery services.
  • Belo Pops – Another Mumbai-based company serves popsicles which are handcrafted, sugar-free, dairy-free as well as gluten-free. These pops are available in different fruity flavours made up of almond milk or walnut milk substitutes.
  • Minus 30 – Handmade frozen dessert, gelato made in small batches is available in many flavours including unique green tea matcha. They have vegan and sugar-free variants.
  • Urban Platter – This is a well-established brand for many food products recently launched vegan gelato in three different flavours.
  • Hyngo – This is a Mangalore-based company started in 2019, now available in many states. This company introduced coconut-based vegan frozen dessert in India with two different flavours coconut and choconut.
  • Vegan Heart – Another brand makes vegan frozen desserts with dates and currently delivers across Mumbai only.
  • Mylk Lux – Raipur, Chhattisgarh-based brand offers nine different flavours in a vegan frozen dessert.
These are the 10 brands which truly believe in sustainable lifestyle and spreading awareness through their work. The beginning of the vegan era is promising in many aspects but challenging to expand the business.

Many companies are focused on handmade, small batches and artistic products which ultimately increases the cost. Mass production with good supply chain is required to expand the reach and maintain the stability of frozen desserts.

Many plant-based milk alternatives like oat milk, millet milk and rice milk are not widely used for gelato or other non-dairy product preparations. Frozen desserts are not considered as a staple food but still, it could be nutritious by adding plant-based protein sources, and fortification of vitamins and minerals so that people can enjoy these desserts without any guilt.
