Christmas celebrations have commenced at Novotel Kolkata Hotel and Residences, Eastern India’s largest five-star hotel, with the Tree of Knowledge, a 15-ft tall Christmas tree in the lobby of the hotel.
The tree is assembled with about 500 books of different genres and for different age groups. These include the works of authors such as Rabindranath Tagore, short story books by Satyajit Ray, etc., brought from the biggest book hub in India, College Street (also known as Boi Para).
The books would be donated to underprivileged kids of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Future Hope Foundation post the New Year.
The lighting of this tree was done in presence of US consul general Patricia Hoffman; artist Subhaprasanna, Rupa Publications owner Raju Barman, and Sandeep Johri, general manager, Novotel Kolkata Hotel & Residences. The celebration was also attended by the children from the NGO and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Johri said, “The festival of joy and celebrations is not complete without a perfectly decorated Christmas tree and gifts for children. This time, we decided to have a Tree of Knowledge that will be decorated with books, the best gift for a child. Further, we have placed a hamper beside the tree for our guests to be a part of this celebration by donating books.”
