The Indian Beverage Association (IBA) expressed its disappointment in trade associations in Tamil Nadu for refusing to sell products manufactured by cola majors Coca-Cola India and Pepsi Co India - two of the largest players in the Indian food processing industry and members of IBA - with effect from March 1, 2017.
“At the outset, we would like to clarify that there is absolutely no connection between our member companies and the ongoing events in Tamil Nadu. As responsible companies, they are extremely sensitive to the local culture and traditions and have been in India for decades, contributing positively to the Indian economy and cultural heritage,” it added.
“Both Coca-Cola India and PepsiCo India are entities registered in India. They provide employment to over 3.5 lakh people, including a significant number of proud Tamilians. They also play a critical role in improving the livelihoods of over five lakh farmers and about four million retailers,” IBA said.
“The proposed call is not just against the interest of the farmers, traders and retailers of the state and the country, but is also not in line with the vision of the Central and state governments that the food processing industry can play in economic growth and development,” it added.
“In addition, IBA members have skilled farmers and retailers in modern techniques of agriculture or commerce. They are deeply involved in ensuring the welfare and sustenance of local community. They have restored water bodies, built dams and played a significant role in disaster relief and rehabilitation in the recent Chennai flood,” IBA informed.
“It is extremely unfair on the part of certain individuals and organisations to propagate misinformation about these IBA members. IBA’s members include Indian companies as well as multi-national corporations (MNCs) who have made significant contributions to the Indian economy,” it added.
“These actions are detrimental to the image of the country and to the long-term interests of the Indian economy. IBA is open to engage with any organisation that has a diverse point of view. In the interim, we urge them not to make false claims or spread misinformation, which may further vitiate the prevailing situation in the state,” IBA stated.
