India’s top teams of pastry chefs gearing up for Jr Pastry Indian Cup

India’s top teams of pastry chefs under the age of 23 will vie for the top spot at the second essay of the Junior Pastry Indian Cup, a two-day competition, which will be held at School for European Pastry (SEP), Andheri, Mumbai, on September 29 and 30, 2018. Online registrations are open until September 11. It will be organised by Bakery Review magazine, the flagship bakery magazine from Hammer Publishers.
The Junior Pastry Indian Cup will see participants from various parts of the country battling it out for the top prize, the best junior pastry chef title in India. All the participants must be Indian nationals, and the team must include two competitors and one mentor.The Junior Pastry Indian Cup is co-hosted and facilitated by Bakery Review magazine, Epicure Frozen Food and Beverages Pvt. Ltd and School for European Pastry.
The theme of this year’s competition is flying. The participants will undergo seven gruelling rounds, which will showcase creations in the following categories - Sugar Sculpture, Chocolate Sculpture, Individual Chocolate Bonbons, The Felchlin Chocolate Cake, Dessert on a Plate, Dessert in a Glass, Mini Pastries and more. The participants should be proficient in sugar art, which includes boiling sugar, casting sugar and pulling sugar.
Sanjay Anand, director, Hammer Publishers Pvt Ltd, said, “The objective of the Junior Pastry Indian Cup is to set up a training ground for large international events, while making it entertaining and showcasing the talents and future of younger generation pastry chefs.”
“Teams are encouraged to try new shapes, trace original lines and innovative decorative effects to give full rein to their imaginations, thinking outside of normal boundaries to create products of the required type,” he added.
Vikas Bagul, chef and director, SEP, stated, “The time has come for our pastry chefs to showcase their skill at the international level. With globalisation of Indian economy now more focus is on India, thus it offers an opportunity to all verticals of the industry to be part of this growth trend, and why not culinary and pastry art.” Sanjay Tandon, managing director, Epicure Frozen Food and Beverages Pvt Ltd, said, “Being a pastry chef is a wonderful career choice for anyone who is artistic and logical, practical and creative. It’s a career with rich opportunities. The Junior Pastry Indian Cup is our effort to motivate young generation to opt pastry chef a serious career.” The pastry event will be mentored and supervised by a jury committee comprising Bagul and chef Avijit Ghosh. The Indian winning team (comprising two contestants and mentor) will represent India at the Junior Pastry World Cup 2019 with an all-expenses paid trip.
The winner of the Indian leg of the qualifying rounds of the competition will represent the country at the Junior Pastry World Cup, slated to take place at SIGEP in Rimini, Italy, in 2019. Participants from nine other nations will take place in the event, which will see different cultures and food traditions meeting, sharing and exchanging projects.
