The Government of India has banned the use of 12 pesticides with immediate effect for agriculture purpose. It added that six other pesticides had been identified for restriction of use from 2020. The government has, in this regard, issued a notification.
The list of prohibited pesticides includes Benomyl, Carbaryl, Diazinon, Fenarimol, Fenthion, Linuron, Methoxy Ethyl Mercury Chloride, Methyl Parathion, Sodium Cyanide, Thiometon, Tridemorph, Trifluralin, Alachlor, Dichlorvos, Phorate, Phosphamidon, Triazophos and Trichlorfon.
According to the officials with the ministry of agriculture and family welfare, the government has acted on the recommendations of an expert committee, which was constituted in 2013, reviewed about 66 pesticides and submitted its report to the agriculture ministry in 2015. The committee found these pesticides hazardous for human health.
The order stated that not only were these pesticides banned for use, but no company shall be allowed to manufacture, import or formulate them either. And any person found violating the norms would be prosecuted accordingly.
It added, “Every state government shall take such steps under the said Act, and the rules made thereunder, as it considers necessary, for the implementation of this order in the state.”
Most of the pesticides were found toxic for pollen grazing birds, bees and even marine lives. Meanwhile, the committee would review around 27 more pesticides again later.
Welcoming the move, Usha Kiran Sisodia, dietician, Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital, Vile Parle, said, “It is a very good move by the government. The use of these harmful pesticides is affecting human health day by day, and making our future generations very weak.” “They may not able to live a healthy life, as they are not getting good-quality food. The only concern would be to keep a eye on the percentage of these pesticides. The shelf life of all products should be reduced to two to three months, which will autocratically reduce the use of these pesticides. Kids and women bearing child age will benefit,” she added.
Agriculture experts, meanwhile, opined that the pesticides which were in use earlier and were now banned by the government were harmful for human health and even to the produce. With the immediate ban, there will be no impact on the agricultural produce, as there are alternate pesticides available which are good in nature.
They added that there were also new types of pesticides coming up in the market. These were known as bio pesticides, which did not have any harmful effect. Also, there is a lot of awareness among the farmers to stop using this toxic pesticides specially done through Integrated Pest Management, which has led to a decrease in their sale.
