Farmers’ devpt & upliftment govt’s priority, says Singh at 3-day event

Inaugurating the Krishi Unnati Mela, a three-day event which is underway at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Radha Mohan Singh, minister for agriculture and farmers’ welfare, stated that the development and upliftment of farmers was the first priority of the government. He added that to achieve the same, its objective was to double the farmers’ incomes by 2022.
Trilochan Mohapatra, secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), and director general, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); secretary, department of agriculture, cooperation and farmers’welfare (DAC&FW);secretary, department of animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries (DADF); deputy director general; director, IARI, scientists and officials were present.
Information about crops, new species of cattle and special schemes and programmes prepared keeping in view protection and empowerment and their progress is being imparted at the mela.Singh stated that it was essential to maintain the fertility of the land for sustainable agriculture development.
The prime minister launched soil health cards in February 2015, and till now, 460 soil testing laboratories have been sanctioned. The governmentmadethe production of neem-coated urea mandatory in May 2015. Moreover, the cost of DAP and MOP fertilisers were reduced.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana was launched to safeguard the farmers from natural disasters like droughts, floods, etc. It includes cereals, oilseeds and commercialhorticulture crops.About 366.64 lakh farmers were covered in kharif 2016.
Singh said that his ministry had made arrangements to conduct wholesale markets through an e-platform (e-NAM) across thecountry, so that the farmers could sell their products at reasonable prices.
To overcome the problem of drought, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana was launched. Under this, water would be provided to every khet (farm). To encourage agriculture and to strengthen rural livelihoods, many schemes of agriculture and farmers’ welfare were launched.
The main schemes are Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, agriculture mechanisation, national agriculture marketing, Kisan Suvidha mobile app, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna, Fisheries Development Management, Integrated Agriculture System Model, etc.
Singh said that the country was self-sufficient in foodgrains, and was, in fact, exporting foodgrains to the other countries. India ranks number one in milk production in the world. Milk production has increased from 137.61 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 146.31 million tonnes in 2014-15, and in 2015-16, milk production was 155.49 million tonnes.
A new scheme, called the National Bovine Productivity Mission, was started in November 2016, with an amount of Rs 825 crore.About 82,930 million eggs were produced in 2015-16.Seeing the unlimited scope of development in fisheries, the Narendra Modi government called for a Blue Revolution in the fisheries sector. For this, a Central budget of Rs3,000 crore was earmarked for a period of five years. The number of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) has gone up to 665. The Cabinet has approved Rs 3,960 crore to runthe KVKs. The prime minister laid special emphasis on lab to land, water, soil productivity and food processing.Prominent among these schemeswere Farmer First, Arya, Student Ready and Mera Gaon, Mera Gaurav.
The regional-level Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Protsahan Puraskarwere distributed.Ramkrishna Ashram, which is based in Nimpith, a village in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, bagged the National Award.
